The benefits of Pilates
Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the entire body. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance. The core, consisting of the muscles of the abdomen, low back, and hips, is often called the "powerhouse" and is thought to be the key to a person's stability. It is a safe, sensible exercise system that will help you look and feel your very best. It teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. Pilates also improves flexibility, agility and economy of motion. It can even help alleviate back pain.
Our Pilates Classes
Pilates Reformer
The reformer Pilates is a bed-like frame with a flat platform that rolls back and forth on wheels. It is an apparatus used as a part of a Pilates exercise session under the direction of the instructor that uses springs for assistance and resistance to achieve proper muscle length and strength in an organized way. The reformer assists the individual in achieving the goals of Pilates, which include the use of diaphragmatic breathing to organize the body’s posture through coordinated movements with an emphasis on postural control.
Pilates Chair
Doing modified Pilates movements while seated in a chair is a great way for older adults to get the health benefits of these exercises without needing to lie down. Staying seated means that even frail seniors or those who aren’t very flexible can safely do the exercises and work towards increasing their strength and flexibility.
Pilates Mat
In this class, we will go through a series of Pilates exercises on the mat. The main focus is the core or called the powerhouse (includes the abdominal, back and hips muscles). Other muscles will definitely work adding lengthening and flexibility in the proper alignment. Some props might be introduced to the class like the magic circle, elastic band or arc barrel. All levels are welcome as the exercises can always be modified.
Pilates Barre
The barre workout is a nice combination between ballets, Pilates, Yoga exercises. It blends cardio, strength training, flexibility, balance and core conditioning in a total body workout that targets the hips, glutes, abs, back and arms. The props used are mainly the Barre, balls and bands. All levels can join the class, no prerequisite classes is needed. But definitely a background of Pilates and Yoga will help understanding the exercises.
Pilates Tower
The Pilates tower is also known as the half trapeze. The trapeze tower was a direct adaptation by Joseph Pilates of a bed with a frame with springs attached to support or challenge traditional Pilates mat work. The tower has a spring bar and a push through bar which can be sprung from the top or the bottom as well as springs with hand/foot loops attached. The tower is great for getting an amazing stretch. It also lends itself well to working on spinal mobility and can assist mastering moves like the roll-up and teaser by assisting you through the movement.
Aerial Yoga
Instead of performing Yoga poses on a mat, Aerial Yoga utilizes a silk hammock or sling that is suspended from the ceiling to perform those same movements. The purpose of the hammock is to provide support through your Yoga flow, while also improving flexibility and range of motion. The hammock also takes pressure off certain areas of the body like the head, spine and shoulders, allowing you to reach those more challenging poses like headstands with greater ease.
Aerial Yoga is an amazing addition to the practice of Yoga as it helps to decompress the spine, increases core strength and balance and provide the action of pulling, a movement that is lacking in the traditional Yoga practice.
